Charter Schools Funding Challenges

The leading advocacy group for charter schools, The California Charter School Association(CCSA), asserts that on average charter schools receive 9% less funding than comparable non-charter schools in California. This comes from a Ball State study that looked at charter school funding nationally.

What does this mean in Novato? The NUSD per student funding in 2011-12 was $5200. This means we can expect $470 less per student enrolled in charter schools. Over $280,000 fewer dollars coming into our community from the state treasury each year if a 600 student charter school opens.

This is on top of the planned state cuts in per student spending for 2012-13 of $441 per student. The NUSD cannot reject a charter based on the financial impact to the district but the community can. Take action.
